Our Greatest Asset .... Family 🥰 Reading Ask the Author: Lisa Glasgow 4 minutes

As a group of avid readers in the LRP team we are very happy to have recently expanded our book offering online and in the showroom. We knew you would be interested in finding out more about some of the wonderful authors and illustrators who have created the ones we've selected. All books have a Hong Kong theme whether it be written or illustrated by someone who lives here or is about the city, the stories and the history of the place so many of us call home.

This week we are meeting Lisa Glasgow author of Why Being Good is Bad For Us.

ABOUT
I arrived in Hong Kong back in 1993, having bought a one-way ticket because I couldn't afford a return! My 3 step-sisters were all living here and kept suggesting I come out, so as soon as I graduated that’s what I did.

As soon as the wheels hit the tarmac I had this overwhelming feeling that I’d arrived ‘home’, and I never looked back!  I’ve lived in SE Asia ever since.

My background is as a writer / Creative Director for the world’s leading advertising agencies, so I’ve lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok and Shanghai, creating advertising and experiential campaigns for the likes of Persil, Levi’s Huawei, Starbucks.

INSPIRATION
Stress was always a strong part of my life - advertising being a highly stressful career - so when it almost brought me to my knees, I started to look around for ways to off-set this stress that I felt, and I discovered TRE - Tension Release Exercises. This is stress release therapy, that activates the body’s natural de-stressing mechanism. It’s a simple yet highly effective process, so in 2016 I took a year out to study this. This involved reading books on neurology, biology, psychology and gut health.

During this time I was also following a programme of personal growth and wellness and, through much introspection, I became aware that I was a ‘People Pleaser’. At first I thought this sounded like a good thing, but the more I looked into it, the more I realised that this was far from good. It was actually harmful to my mental health and my physical health. All the science was saying the same thing: living inauthentically adds stress to the body, and this makes us ill.

So for the next 8 years I explored this People Pleasing part of me and discovered that it had its tentacles in almost every area of my life. I saw that it was part of a bigger programme which I call the GOOD Person Programme, where “GOOD” means we continually seek external approval and validation, and this means we are not living true to who we really are - we are not being our authentic selves.

I met so many other people who also shared these same subconscious behavioural traits, that I decided to put all my learning, experience, and study into a book that threads together the biology behind why we feel compelled to be ‘GOOD”, what this means in terms of our daily behaviour, how this is in fact harmful to us, how to identify who we really are authentically, and how to change this subconscious programme into our own healthy, authentic, expression.

Thus the book was born!

FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO OR SEE IN HONG KONG
My favourite thing to do in Hong Kong is to go hiking and get out amidst the splendid Hong Kong hills and countryside.
