We now have a number of talented artists, illustrators and designers whose prints and photography we sell at The Lion Rock Press. It's time to introduce you to some of the people behind the prints! Michael Kan (also known as Paper With Pen) is sharing a bit more about himself and the inspiration behind the work he creates.
About you
Having studied architecture at university I am currently working as an architectural assistant in London. Growing up with an interest in the built environment of the city, I have a deep passion in urban sketching from cityscape of downtown alleyways to local corner shops. I believe recording our urban environment through art is not only crucial to the creation of inhabitable space in a city, it also represents our sense of identity of a place.
Your Inspiration
Hong Kong is a unique cosmopolitan place that creates a great mix of high rise density and vibrant local streetscape. The architecture that ordinary people pass by everyday forms a distinct part of Hong Kong’s collective memories. However, the integral components of this urban tapestry, particularly the old shops and historical tenement buildings lining the city's streets, are becoming increasingly scarce. They are visual characteristics that are hard to replicate elsewhere. When they start to vanish, it may signify the demise of the broader culture that Hong Kong represents. The threat posed by escalating urban renewal projects endangers many cherished landmarks and local businesses, including street stalls and traditional diners. This became my aspiration to document these disappearing facets of Hong Kong.
Favourite thing to do or see in Hong Kong
I really like to wander around the local market in Pei Ho Street in Sham Shui Po. It is a fascinating place and bustling street scene of life, where you are exposed to the variety of street food, affordable crafts and electronics, and the lively rhythm of bargaining voices from local vendors.
