Think seven hours isn't enough to experience Hong Kong? Think again.

If you've got a long layover, you can squeeze in incredible skyline views, authentic Hong Kong food, historic temples, bustling antique markets, a ride on the iconic Star Ferry and even visit one of Hong Kong's favourite independent gift shops—all before heading back to the airport.

Here's a fun way to spend a 7-hour layover in Hong Kong.

First off take Airport Express into Central then head to the Peak Tram!

No first visit to Hong Kong is complete without taking the famous Peak Tram up to Victoria Peak.

The journey is an experience in itself, climbing steeply through the city's skyscrapers before opening up to one of the world's most spectacular skylines.

If you're short on time, enjoy the view from the Peak Terrace before heading straight back down.

Time: 1–1.5 hours

After the Peak, walk into Central and stop at a traditional cha chaan teng.

Order a classic Hong Kong-style milk tea (and maybe a pineapple bun if you're feeling hungry). It's one of the city's most iconic food experiences and the perfect introduction to local culture.

Just a short walk away is Central Market, a beautifully restored heritage building that's now home to independent shops, cafés and exhibitions. It's a wonderful blend of old Hong Kong architecture and modern creativity, making it well worth a quick wander.

From there, hop onto the famous Central–Mid-Levels Escalator—the world's longest covered outdoor escalator system. Even if you only ride part of it, it's one of the most uniquely Hong Kong ways to travel, passing cafés, apartment buildings and hidden side streets as it climbs uphill.

Hop off at Hollywood Road to continue your adventure.

Time: 30–45 minutes

One of the best walks in Hong Kong begins on Hollywood Road.

As you wander west, you'll discover:

Just a few minutes away is one of Hong Kong's most iconic dim sum restaurants.

At Lin Heung Tea House, traditional dim sum is still served from trolleys, offering a wonderfully nostalgic dining experience that's become increasingly rare.

After lunch, hop aboard one of Hong Kong Island's famous double-decker trams - head to the northern platform of the Western Market Terminus

Known locally as the Ding Ding, it's one of the cheapest—and most enjoyable—ways to see the city.

Ride east through Central while watching everyday Hong Kong life unfold outside the window. Get off at Pedder Street then take the elevated walkway to the piers where you will find the Star Ferry!

For just a few dollars, you'll enjoy one of the world's greatest harbour crossings, with panoramic views of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

Many visitors say it's one of the highlights of their trip.

Once you arrive in Kowloon, make your way to Hong Kong Station (via the MTR if you ferry back to Central) or Kowloon Station to catch the Airport Express.

Within around 25 minutes, you'll be back at Hong Kong International Airport—having experienced an incredible slice of the city in just a few hours.
